When South African Breweries first launched Hansa Pilsener in 1975, the market was not immediately convinced by this new alternative to lager. It was only two years later that Hansa was able to break away from the initial skepticism, through relaunching the brand.
Hansa achieved this by lauching a campaign that highlighted the benefits to drinking pilsener as opposed to lager. After this, a shift in perception occurred and soon Hansa was received with open arms by the South African market.
Hansa was then seen as the upmarket beer that offered a refreshing alternative to other brands.
It was the slogan "refreshingly different" that resonated with consumers and anchored the brand in a territory that was unique for South African beer brands. After that Hansa grew from strength to strength and in 2001 it became the second biggest beer brand in South Africa.
Skip forward 10 years and it had been voted by the Sunday Times as the most popular beer in South Africa.
